Aqua rehabilitation

Aqua rehabilitation

Whether it's a big surgery, and accident, or a genetic illness, aquatic rehabilitation can help get your dog back on it's paws

Dog Aqua  pool rehabilitation consists of gentle exercises  that are performed in our heated Aqua pool that was built for dogs at 33 Devonshire Ave. Water therapy and TTouch, done at the same time, in the pool is useful for a variety of medical conditions. We can assist with dogs that have had cruciate ligament repairs, hip replacements, knee operations, back operations, joint and tissue swelling as well as dogs suffering from stiffness, arthritis, overweight dogs and teaching puppies and older dogs swimming and water awareness. Many dogs drown because they panic when they fall in the water. Assisting them to know what being in water feels like and teaching them to go to the step is very valuable.

We use the physical properties of water to assist in patient healing and exercise performance. When the patient is in the water, with a lifejacket on, the buoyancy provided by the water supports their weight and therefore decreases the amount of weight bearing on their joints. This reduces the force of stress placed on the joints. By decreasing the amount of stress placed on the joints,  it is easier and less painful to perform exercises.
The resistance caused by the viscosity of water is used as a tool for muscle strengthening and coupled with the water’s buoyancy assists the patient to strengthen muscle groups with decreased joint stress.

Water therapy with TTouch  also assists with  improving joint position awareness and patient’s proprioception. When ligaments are torn, legs are broken or hips replaced the patient’s proprioception is decreased. When the various movements are performed in the water without pain the muscle memory returns and the patient can perform the movements with ease.
Muscle spasm, back pain, hip pain and dull arthritic pain  are lessened as the warm water helps to relax the muscles and increases blood flow to injured areas.

Niki studied Physiotherapy for humans and TTouch for Companion Animals, and has the knowledge to be able to assist with rehabilitation in the pool.
